Leicester are growing increasingly unlikely to sign Atalanta forward Jeremie Boga, with a key concern putting Brendan Rodgers off.

The Foxes have had one of the most frustrating summer transfer windows of any Premier League club. A lack of funds has made new signings hard to come by, but plenty of exit speculation has remained.

And Wesley Fofana is the biggest of those departures, with Chelsea paying an initial £70million for the centre-back.

As for incomings, Wout Faes has arrived as Fofana’s replacement, although he is the only notable signing so far.

Leicester therefore hoped to bring in former Chelsea attacker Boga before the transfer deadline.

According to Sky Sports News (01/09, 7.22pm), though, Leicester will end the summer window with yet more frustration.

Atalanta are happy to sanction a loan deal for Boga – but have insisted there must be an obligation to purchase next summer.

Leicester, though, are unwilling to take such a punt on a player who only played 18 minutes of first-team action in England. Indeed, Boga’s only first-team appearance came in a 3-2 Chelsea defeat to Burnley in 2017.

Leicester therefore wanted to see how the Ivorian got on in the Premier League by having the option to buy him in a loan deal.

But with both sides’ sticking points seemingly unresolvable, Sky Sports News claims that ‘optimism has waned’ as Thursday evening has progressed.

Leicester have remained steadfast in their approach to the window, insisting that – amid Financial Fair Play restrictions – they will avoid adding to the squad too much if unnecessary.

Leicester’s stance on Boga is the correct one. He is not worth a punt on obligatory terms given his lack of experience in England.

The winger has played 102 games for Sassuolo in his career, scoring 18 goals and assisting 10 others.

At Atalanta, meanwhile, Boga has scored twice and assisted another strike in 23 outings.

But despite this being the right call from Leicester, there is nevertheless serious frustration about their lack of business.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers admitted before Thursday’s Premier League clash with Manchester United that this transfer window has been the most taxing of his managerial career to date.

And the lack of signings make it unclear how the Foxes will go on.
