The plans for a new Amazon fulfillment center in Greensboro, first reported by Rhino Times, has been cancelled.

The Rhino Times in an article on Dec. 3, 2021, reported that Amazon planned to build a 2-million-square-foot fulfillment center employing an estimated 2,000 people at a site on Ritters Lake Road.

In March, the Triad Business Journal also reported on the planned Amazon fulfillment center at that location.

Now Amazon has announced that it won’t be building the fulfillment center after never publicly announcing that it was.

The Greensboro fulfillment center was on a list of Amazon facilities closed and canceled published by CNBC on Wed. Sept. 14.

According to CNBC, Amazon has closed or canceled 44 facilities across the country and delayed the opening of another 25.

The Greensboro facility was among the 21 planned facilities that, according to CNBC, Amazon was canceling.  Also on that list was a delivery station in Wilmington that was canceled and a delivery station in Enka Village, NC, that was put on hold.

According to CNBC, Amazon is pulling back from its rapid expansion to meet the increased demand caused by the pandemic lockdowns.

The site in Greensboro is 109 acres at 238 Ritters Lake Road that was annexed by the City Council and zoned light industrial at the Nov. 17 Greensboro City Council meeting.

At that meeting there was no mention of Amazon, but Mike Fox, an attorney with Tuggle Duggins representing the Williams Development Group that had requested the annexation and original zoning, said, “This is a good site for this type of project warehouse distribution.”

Fox also indicated that a number of improvements would have to be made to the transportation system in the area to handle the increased traffic.

The Triad Business Journal has reported that Williams Development Group was pursuing other plans for the site.

Glad this one didn’t make it. Not a company that is known for paying living wages or caring about its employees. Glad to see people returning to in person stores with the pandemic ended.

Not every job needs to pay a living wage. Minimum wage is called the minimum for a reason. Many jobs are more suited for low skilled, entry level into the work force, AKA Teenagers. It’s a means for them to learn how to earn money, to exchange labor for skills, growth, and funds. No one should be trying to earn a living at McDonalds for example, unless you are at the management level. That is not what that place is designed for, unless you want a $25 Big Mac.

Same at Amazon. If your job is moving packages along a set route inside the warehouse, don’t expect to be making rocket scientist pay. It is an entry level job.

Amazon said they NEVER HAD A PLAN for a distribution center in Greensboro.

Oh my…what will our county and city government democrats do now?

What are the two huge warehouses that are being built out past Bryan Park with road construction at the Bryan Park exit?

Good place to pull out of. I guess we are now on par with NYC.

Isn’t this just like the leaders of Guilford County!!!!!! They have a reputation for driving away a very good employer for the county. What happened lady mayor ???
