Residents of West Linn and Oregon City near the Abernethy Bridge likely heard strange noises beginning July 6. As the Oregon Department of Transportation started work to widen and seismically retrofit the bridge as part of its I-205 improvement project, crews began pile-driving beneath the bridge.
According to an ODOT information page, "Pile driving is a construction method used to embed vertical columns made of large 24"-36" steel pipes by (driving) them into soil with a very large hammer."
Pile-driving will allow crews to construct a temporary work bridge, which they will use when constructing Abernethy's new foundation.
ODOT said that for those about 500 feet from the work site, noise associated with pile-driving would be similar to regular city traffic.
Crews will pile-drive in the area between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday through October.
"While noise from this activity will be disruptive in the immediate area, it is the only safe and reliable method to ensure the contractor can safely access the new bridge foundation in the river," according to ODOT.
The agency stated that it would take reasonable steps to lessen the severity of noise, like muffling machinery and vibrating the piles into the soil so less hammer strikes are needed to drive them to the necessary depth.
